Preparing for your Oral Surgery Appointment

During your consultation, your oral surgeon will go over some basic guidelines about how to prepare for surgery, and specifically how to prepare for the administration of IV sedation. Here is a summary of the general surgical guidelines. Always ask your surgeon if you have any questions or concerns.

Food and Beverages

Do not have ANYTHING to eat or drink for 8 HOURS prior to your
appointment. Clear liquids (water or apple juice) are permitted
until 2 hours before your check-in time.

An empty stomach is essential for your safety while under anesthesia.

Smoking & Use of Tobacco Products

Please refrain from smoking or using tobacco products for at least
12 hours prior to your appointment.
Do not smoke or use tobacco products
for at least 48 hours after your surgery. Smoking and use of tobacco
products are the primary cause of infection and can contribute to other complications,
such as dry sockets. Smoking will decrease the success rate of dental implants
by approximately 20%.

Transportation & Post-Op Care

You must have a responsible adult accompany you on the day
of your surgery.*
They must remain in our office reception area during your
procedure, drive you home after your surgery and remain with you throughout the day.
Most surgeries last approximately one hour. You will be notified if your procedure will be
longer than one hour. Under no condition will you be allowed to
drive yourself home after the procedure.
You should not operate
any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia. All sedation patients must be
supervised by a responsible adult for at least 24 hours following surgery.

*IMPORTANT: Minors MUST have a parent or legal guardian
accompany them; an older sibling does not suffice.

If you plan to use a ride service (Uber, Lyft, etc.) you must notify our
office ahead of time for additional instructions.

Clothing

Please wear loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves that can easily be
rolled up past your elbow. Also, please wear low-heeled shoes.

Oral Hygiene

Thoroughly brush your teeth, floss and rinse with mouthwash prior to surgery.

Contact Lenses & Jewelry

Please leave contact lenses and jewelry at home–do not wear them to our office
the day of your procedure.

Makeup and Nail Polish

Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup or nail polish on the day of your procedure.

Change In Health Status

If you develop an illness, such as a cold, fever, sore throat, stomach upset
or bowel problems prior to surgery, please call our office for further instructions.

Medications

Take all regularly prescribed medications according to
directions–take with just a small sip of water.

If you take more than two regular aspirin or other over-the-counter pain relievers
daily, such as Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Tylenol or Ibuprofen, please notify our office for
further instructions at least 24 hours prior to your appointment.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ANY MEDICATION PRIOR TO YOUR SURGERY
UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN DIRECTED TO DO SO.

Post-operative medications will be submitted electronically to your pharmacy. Some
pharmacies don’t accept electronic prescriptions. In this case, you will be given a
written prescription at the time of your appointment.

Questions or Concerns

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask us over the phone or in
person. It’s important that you clearly understand the circumstances surrounding
your procedure.

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN THE POSTPONEMENT OF YOUR PROCEDURE.
