What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of using medication to help patients relax during any type of dental procedure. Some patients experience anxiety from just getting a routine teeth cleaning, but others don’t experience it unless they have to have a major procedure completed. The reality is that dental anxiety is common, but sedation dentistry is available to help patients feel comfortable and confident visiting the oral surgeon so they can maintain good dental health.

Dr. Austin Ivey offers several methods of anesthesia and uses them according to the patient’s requests. Our number one priority is ensuring your safety and comfort, so feel free to ask us any questions you have about anesthesia and sedation dentistry. The more information we know about your concerns and your health in general, the better we’ll be able to serve you and create optimal results.

Methods of Anesthesia Available

The methods of anesthesia Dr. Ivey offers include:

  • Local Anesthetic – used mostly in simple oral procedures like single tooth extractions.
  • Nitrous Oxide with Local Anesthetic – used mostly in simple procedures that require a little more involvement, like multiple extractions, wisdom teeth removaldental implant placement, and oral pathology appointments.
  • Office-Based General Anesthesia with Local Anesthetic – used in wisdom teeth removal procedures and dental implant placements when local anesthesia is not effective.
  • Surgery Center or Hospital-Based General Anesthesia – used for more intense procedures like jaw and facial surgery. Also used for patients with a compromised medical history.

Why Do Patients Choose Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is used for many reasons. One of the most common reasons is to help control dental anxiety. With the different levels of anesthesia available, patients can choose to be awake and in a relaxed state, be completely unconscious, or somewhere in between. Dr. Ivey will only administer anesthesia that you decide upon.

Dental Anxiety Is Real, But So Are Results

Some patients have dental anxiety, and they don’t even know it. If you intentionally ignore your dental health, it could be because you have a certain anxiety level about visiting your dentist or oral surgeon. At Dr. Ivey’s office, we work with patients on a daily basis to help alleviate any concerns they may have. Instead of focusing on those matters, we focus on real results that can be seen.

When patients visit our office, they are often unhappy about their dental health or current dental situation. Sedation dentistry is often the recommended option for patients because they can get the results they desire without having to feel uncomfortable during the process.
