Medically Reviewed By Dr. Ivey

As you prepare for wisdom teeth removal, it’s natural to wonder about downtime and recovery. Wisdom teeth removal is considered routine oral surgery and typically allows for a quick return to normal activities.  Following Dr. Ivey’s post-operative instructions and knowing what to expect during recovery are key to ensuring a smooth experience.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery Timeline

While recovery experiences vary, most patients can expect the following stages:

  • First 24 hours: Mild bleeding and swelling are common. Patients are advised to rest and protect the surgical site during this time.
  • Days 2–3: Swelling often peaks during this time, which is a normal part of healing. Applying cold compresses to the outside of the face in short intervals can help reduce inflammation and ease discomfort.
  • Days 3–5: By this stage, most patients notice that swelling has started to subside and discomfort is more manageable. Light daily activities usually feel easier, but it’s still important to avoid heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or anything that could disrupt the healing sites.
  • One week: Many return to normal routines. If sutures were placed, they may be removed around this time.
  • Two weeks and beyond: Most discomfort and swelling resolve. The surgical sites continue healing as tissues strengthen.
  • In adults, some pain and dull aches can continue for several weeks.

Recommended Foods During Recovery

What you eat after surgery plays an important role in recovery. Soft, easy-to-eat foods reduce the risk of irritation and support proper healing. In the initial days after surgery, patients often find the following options most comfortable:

  • Smooth, spooned shakes or blended drinks that provide protein and energy.
  • Yogurt, applesauce, or pudding.
  • Mashed potatoes, oatmeal, or other soft grains.
  • Broths or blended soups, cooled to a safe temperature.
  • Scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, or soft fish.

As healing progresses, patients may gradually reintroduce more solid foods based on their surgeon’s guidance. Foods that are hard, crunchy, or spicy should be avoided until cleared, as they may disturb the surgical site. Read more about safe foods to eat after wisdom teeth removal here
